Evolution under attack

It scares the hell out of me to think that generations of American children are being taught (at best) that evolution is "controversial" and "not universally accepted". If nothing else, imagine how behind America will be in biotech-related fields when half the country is completely ign'ant of one of the core foundations of modern biology - to say nothing of the ethical corruptness we as a country will have when demagogues so absurdly force their agenda on the majority of the populace and that majority sits quietly by and says nothing.

This article in the New York Times brings up another disturbing trend in this attack on basic science: many teachers in the South and Midwest simply don't teach (or skirt around) evolution not because they don't believe in it but because they don't have the time or energy to deal with the uproar they fear from fundamentalist parents in their district. Where will this de facto censorship end? Will people finally say "enough" when fundamentalists, claiming that there is no evidence of it in the Bible, force the country to stop teaching trigonometry or algebra?

Parental Visit

The parental types and some colleagues are in town for the next few days on business, so I'll be spending the evenings trying to find good places to eat near their hotel. Last night we tried a French place that had come well recommended. It was pretty good but not stupendous and, unfortunately, more expensive than I was expecting (which can be problematic when academics are paying out of a per diem).

There's a lot of stress in suggesting restaurants, especially when you don't know the area and some of the diners very well. Makes me want to go grill some salmon.

Anyway, tonight's experiment will be Brindisi Cucina di Mare. Italian seafood tapas should be interesting.

Alcatraz

Went to Alcatraz over the weekend. I was expecting to be disappointed by some exploitive trash but I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. We took an audio tour that did a wonderful job of recreating the atmosphere of the prison while it was in use. You are made keenly aware of the isolation prisoners felt at seeing lush scenery and a vibrant city out their window.

Interestingly, since most of the windows were frosted, a beautiful warm light suffused the cell house. I'll post some more pics tomorrow - it felt good to be shooting again.

Over the weekend, some of our friends back east gave us an excellent grill for our new house. I sure do wish they could be here to witness the first flesh searings, but I hope they understand that we have no intention of waiting for them to come out before using this wonderful toy.

Oh, and by the way, Jet Blue is having a sale
