What's this?
An update? Can it be?

On Friday, the missus and I went to The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival, a presentation of several artists who work with fire and electricity. Aside from the usual Burning Man fire-dancing ravers junk, there was some incredibly cool stuff. Hilights included: a 15-foot tall Tesla coil (pictured) and several installations that shot flames 70-80 feet into the air. The most insane piece we saw, though, was a circular array of fans into which two guys in fire suits were injecting sprays of gasoline. The net result was a cyclone of flame that leapt about 100 feet into the air and danced around like a true funnel cloud. I'll post a picture of that later.
Finally some promised pics from our trip to Yosemite a few weeks ago.
Keith LongHair is going to hate me for saying this, but I've been toying around with using my shots as true digital negatives. To save some measure of self respect, though, I'm limiting myself to what I would normally do in an analog darkroom - coarse exposure and color correction and spot retouching. Painting out a scratch or hot CMOS pixel, ok. Cloning out something I was too lazy to compose around, not ok. This image, for instance, is only carefully burned and dodged.
Our friends KP, Sarah and Todd came in from New York along with our friends Maria and Leon, who came in from Chicago. We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend; I was telling AX that this was the first time in a while I actually felt refreshed and ready to face the week of work.
On Friday night, we went up to Point Reyes National Seashore and had a fire on the beach, where we were joined by our friends Dan and Andre. This picture was taken about fourty five minutes after sunset. There was just still enough light in the sky to put some color into the background.
OK, so I have been remiss in updating recently. While I'm sure you've all enjoyed looking at pictures of a toilet for the last month, it's time for something new. The good news is that AX and I went to Yosemite over the weekend so you can expect a flurry of postcard shots in the next few days (there are so many, in fact, that I need to go get an external hard drive now that my poor little laptop drive is full).
In the meantime, here's a picture of my cousin and her daughter I took last thanksgiving.
Went to Alcatraz over the weekend. I was expecting to be disappointed by some exploitive trash but I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. We took an audio tour that did a wonderful job of recreating the atmosphere of the prison while it was in use. You are made keenly aware of the isolation prisoners felt at seeing lush scenery and a vibrant city out their window.
Interestingly, since most of the windows were frosted, a beautiful warm light suffused the cell house. I'll post some more pics tomorrow - it felt good to be shooting again.
Excuse for not posting #2: I just got back from a wonderful trip during which I got married to my beautiful, um, wife Athena. I'll be posting some more of my own, but there's a whole slew of nice pics that some of my friends took at KP's gallery.
The rings, pictured above, were made by Russ who works at the Gem Gallery, 2945 College Ave. in Berkeley. He did a phenomenal job, IMHO, so he gets the shameless plug.
On my way to work this morning, I saw two police officers giving a photojournalist a hard time for taking pictures of the trains. Since my weekday shooting locations are almost exclusively in and around public transportation, I figured everyone was a little too jittery for me to be shooting without credentials.
More from yesterday's excursion on the Lower East Side
As I've said, I'm working a lot of overtime these days so most of my shooting is happening either directly on my commute or at night.
Or in this case, both.
Welcome. This is the photo that motivated me to get going and set up this blog. I'm hoping that forcing myself to make regular photo updates will force me to keep my photography fresh. One of the things I hope to focus on will be to figure out what my style is. Right now I feel a little all over the place thematically - I'm too busy getting a nice image to know what it is that I like about what I'm seeing.
This photo was taken on a humid evening outside my old apartment. Gothamist on why the lightning is so forky.
